Ezra Taft Benson Quote

Our real struggle, the paramount struggle of all, is between freedom and socialistic communism. Our major danger is that we are currently...transferring responsibility from the individual, local and state governments to the federal government. There is no freedom under full socialism. Our fight is freedom vs. creeping socialism. Socialism is simply: Government ownership and control of the means of production and distribution.

Reflections on the 4th of the July
As I reflect upon the 4th of July, I can't help but think about the freedom that our founding fathers wanted desperately from a tyrannical King of Great Britain.

As they said in the Declaration of Independence, "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies, and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated abuses and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states."

Now I recited this from memory, so if I missed a few words here and there please forgive me.

Looking back on these words, it is clear that the founding fathers felt that the King of England had overstepped his bounds and wanted a servile people to follow his orders, no questions asked. The King of England didn't care about their freedoms. In fact, he repeatedly abused them as all tyrants too.

Now tyranny takes many forms, but generally it takes the form of abuses or trampling upon the individual rights of people of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and protection of property. These are fundamental rights that government does not give us, but that God has given us. When you think and ponder what rights you have and where you get them from, it becomes apparent that they are born in us. Everyone knows instinctively that they have the right of self-defense. If someone attacks you, you know that you can attack back. If someone is restricting your free movement or your liberties, you know that it isn't right regardless of what system of government you live under. When someone is stopping you from worshipping how you want in your pursuit of happiness, you know this is wrong. If someone takes your property away from you, you know it is wrong as well. How do you know it is wrong? Where does this sense of wrong come from? It comes from God naturally. It doesn't come from the government.

Any government that tramples on these rights, is a government that needs to be altered or abolished as the founding fathers indicated. It is the people's rights to do so.

And as I reflect on this, I realize that the American government has become a government like this. It tramples on the God-given rights of its people's life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness all in the name of safety nets, race-related laws, political correctness, income taxes, etc. This country used to be a country where a man enjoyed the labors of his hands. Now it is a land where man enjoys maybe 50 percent of the labors of his hands, and the other 50 percent goes to some government entity to provide someone else with a safety net, and income, a drug benefit, to redress some wrong, to buy votes, etc. You think of it, the government has a million reasons and ways to spend your money.

I thought of this today, and wonder how we got here and how do we correct it? First, why should we correct it? I think that this can best be summed up by Benjamin Franklin when he said, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin understood that when people give up liberty for security and safety, that eventually the government becomes the exact thing the founding fathers were fighting against, an absolute tyranny. People must always guard their liberty and not trust government to provide them safety nets, because ultimately the government will naturally use those safety nets and promises to destroy their liberty. With ever increasing promises that eventually they cannot deliver on, the government will ultimately destroy most of the individual liberties of the people and the people will be left with neither liberty nor safety. It is how it has always been and how it will always be. Benjamin Franklin knew this.

So how do we correct it? It is simple, we, as a nation, must expect and demand the government to do less for us. If we continue down the same path we are on, with ever increasing entitlement programs of social security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and soon to be universal health care; then we are marching down the path that Benjamin Franklin warned us of, the path of choosing safety over liberty and ultimately ending up without freedom and liberty. The government will do every thing for you. The government will no longer serve the people, but the people will serve the government. This is the natural end game of a people who choose safety over liberty. We need to fight for lower taxes, for the repeal of the 16th amendment, which authorized the federal government to directly tax our incomes. Did you know the federal government could tax your income a 100 percent if it wanted to. At one point the highest tax bracket was over 90 percent. Does this sound American to you? The only way to stop the growth of the government is to remove its power to generate income.

I am constantly amazed at how docile or easily Americans passively stand by as their government continually takes more and more of their money in the form of tax increases, regulations, levies, fines, and such instead of fighting them tooth and nail. In fact, these same people will complain that they know the government is wasting their money or spending it unwisely. Everyone knows this, yet they continue to accede to this as if it is a forgone conclusion. It is not and it can change. If the amendment to ban alcohol was repealed, then the amendment creating the income tax can be repealed.

I always tell those who are educated, smart, hard-working, and responsible that if you want to enjoy the fruits of your labors, you better wake up pretty quickly because soon enough the amount of people that feel entitled to government benefits will outweigh the amount of people who have no such feelings and then it will become too late. The time to act now and the only way to do so is with your votes, with your phone calls, and with your letters to your Congressman. They don't seem to get it or they have their own agendas.

In fact, I find it rather interesting that some politicians even have the audacity to say that Americans don't want tax cuts and that Americans need universal health care. If you want to lose your freedom and liberty forever, then you want universal health care run by the government. This program will affect and tie every American to the federal government. It will cause a loss of liberty like no other program in American history. If you don't like your money and your hard work, then you want these kinds of programs and you want big government. I don't want this and I work for the rest of my life to alter this current system of government. I know my rights under the Constitution which is still the supreme law of the land. I will work peacefully by using my right to free speech to organize and rally people to a realization of what is happening. We are losing our liberty to the government because too many people believe the promises coming from the politicians mouths of increased safety and security without price. There is a price and the price is high, the price is your freedom and liberty. Benjamin Franklin understood this. When will America get this and understand and awake from the slumber she is in and realize that we still have the power of the vote and our voices to fight this. It isn't too late yet, but it will be soon, because eventually they will come after the power of our votes and our voices.

God bless America and God bless that Americans will wake up and realize that they can't have safety and liberty together. Choose liberty, not safety. Repeal the 16th Amendment. This is the only way to stop the federal government from growing to big.
