Adam Smith Quote

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages. Nobody but a beggar chooses to depend chiefly upon the benevolence of his fellow citizens.

Who will save your soul?
Who will save your soul? Usually these types of questions are left to religion to answer. In most cases, the saving of one's soul is a personal choice or journey. Why is this? A soul is an individual unit. Therefore the saving of it must be done on an individual level. Interestingly, Barack Obama's campaign has interjected the idea of saving the soul into the political campaigns this year. His wife stated in a campaign speech that "We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another - that we cannot measure our greatness in the society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done - that is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this race who understands that. That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls - our souls are broken in this nation." The idea that a politician would want to attempt to fix someone's soul, when traditionally that role was played by a religious figure is creepy. Remember it was Marx, the founder of socialism, who referred to religion as the "opiate of the masses". But for a socialist, one who believes in the government's role to provide from birth to death, it is not farfetched at all. For socialism is also a religion. Traditional religions promise their followers that if they live a good life in this world that they will be rewarded in the after-life. Socialism does this one better. It offers the promise of building heaven on Earth. One need not wait for the afterlife to receive one's reward. One can get the reward here on Earth if one works hard enough together to achieve it.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been reading a book on Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler, the most famous socialists of our time. Interestingly, these men all wanted to save the soul of their nation. That was their motivation. That belief justified the atrocities they committed, for they thought that they could do anything as long as it led to a socialist utopia, which they never achieved. I am not saying that Barack Obama or his wife are synonymous with Lenin, Stalin or Hitler; but clearly their belief that they can fix the soul of America, or save the soul of America, falls in line with what the great socialist tyrants of the past believed as well. They believed that they could change society and change people through collective group efforts. They ultimately failed because they failed to realize that any soul saving must happen on an individual level, not on a collective level.

Barack Obama is running the campaign of change, but in reality his is a campaign of collective socialist values, a campaign that believes that together we can change the world. This idea is no different than the ideas that Hitler and Stalin held. True change comes from within and is an individual choice, something which a false savior or politician cannot touch. Only a true Savior can save one's soul. I just hope that most Americans realize before itís too late that a political savior is a dangerous animal because they believe they are doing what is right and that often the ends justify the means. Just read a little about Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. They often justified their atrocities based on their belief that anything was ok as long as they drove towards the socialist ideal.

Finally, let me share a three brief passages from the book "Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe" by Robert Gellately.

1. Lev Kopelev, a young and enthusiastic Communist and a "thousander" who took part in these raids, left a memoir. He accepted Stalin's views and recalled how he "was convinced that were warriors on an invisible front, fighting against kulak sabotage for the grain which was needed by our country, by the five-year plan." He thought he had a mission to save "the souls of these peasants who were mired in unconscientiousness, in ignorance, who succumbed to enemy agitation, who did not understand the great truth of communism."

2. Hitler's tome (Mein Kampf) runs to nearly seven hundred pages. (He) emphasized that his mission was to save the country.

3. The first issue of the Cheka (Lenin's secret police who killed hundreds of thousands) newspaper in Kiev from mid-August 1919 printed an article on the universal mission of the revolution: "For us there do not, and cannot exist the old systems of morality and humanity invented by the bourgeoisie for the purpose of oppressing and exploiting the lower classes. Our morality is new, our humanity is absolute for it rests on the bright ideal of destroying all oppression and coercion. To us all is permitted, for we are the first in the world to raise the sword not in the name of enslaving and oppressing anyone, but in the name of freeing them from all bondage...Blood? Let there be blood, if it alone can turn the grey-white-and black banner of the old pirate's world to a scarlet hue, for only the complete and final death of that world will save us from the return of the flag of the old jackals!"

From my readings and the passages that I shared with you, it is clear that socialism is a religious experience for many. Unfortunately, history has proven that socialism is the most bloody of all religions. It has been responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths as its proponents and leaders followed a "new" morality to try to wipe away the "old" world that you and I live in. Do you really want to trust your nation to people who believe in socialism, to leaders who want to try to fix the soul. That path has already been paved by hundreds of millions of Germans, Russians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Cuban, and ethnic groups who have been slaughtered by those who sought to save their souls through socialism. Any man or woman who thinks they understand in fine enough detail the steps needed to save a nation's soul is a man or woman who is just as delusional as Stalin, Lenin, Hitler, or Mao was. Leave the soul fixing and saving to the individual and the church.
