Marcus Tullius Cicero Quote

Though liberty is established by law, we must be vigilant, for liberty to enslave us is always present under that very liberty! Our Constitution speaks of the 'general welfare of the people.' Under the phrase all sorts of excesses can be employed by lusting tyrants to make us bondsmen.

Progressive Contempt For Freedom
I recently read a comment on a news story online. The commentator suggested that anyone that opposes progressive thinking, what that should mean, is from the 18th century. If 18th century thinking means that I defend the freedoms and liberties that the founding fathers fought over, then I guess true values are timeless and I donít seek to limit my thinking to any specific era like the commentator wishes to do. Here is what I wrote the commentator.

Contrary to the beliefs of some progressives who have commented on this column, we 18th century thinkers are in pretty good company with such great men as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and others. I'm not sure if this crossed his mind. If you were going to insult those of us who believe in freedom and liberty more than we believe in collectivism, progressivism, and socialism; then you should have used a different century. Our friendly progressives seem to forget that there are a few basic principles that aren't negotiable in this world and they are negotiable because they are natural, God-given rights. These include life, liberty and protection of private property. Our government was created to protect those rights and nothing more. Thankfully, not all folks have drunk from the Kool-Aid cup that other progressives of their times, including such great progressives as Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Hitler, Ho Chi Minh. They were all progressives, thinking outside the box, drinking from the same collectivist Kool-Aid cup that progressives drink from today. If we could just control everyone and everything then we could all make it better they say. Well, things don't work out that way because we are human and we have desires, appetites and passions that cannot be squelched by the force our loving progressives wish to use.
