Milton Friedman Quote

The preservation and expansion of freedom are today threatened from two directions. The one threat is obvious and clear. It is the external threat coming from the evil men in the Kremlin who promise to bury us. The other threat is far more subtle. It is the internal threat coming from men of good intentions and good will who wish to reform us. Impatient with the slowness of persuasion and example to achieve the great social changes they envision, they are anxious to use the power of the state to achieve their ends and confident of their own ability to do so. Yet if they gained the power, they would fail to achieve their immediate aims and, in addition, would produce a collective state from which they would recoil in horror and of which they would be among the first victims. Concentrated power is not rendered harmless by the good intentions of those who create it.

An Open Letter to Congress
The fairness doctrine should be opposed for four reasons:

1. It pre-supposes that there are only 2 sides to an issue, a conservative side and a liberal side.

2. It pre-supposes that neither side is superior to the other. This is not realistic. In any argument, one side comes out ahead based on the facts.

3. It gives the weaker side equal airtime even though it is the weaker position. The weaker position will naturally get fewer listeners in a free market because people naturally gravitate to positions that are superior.

4. It infringes upon free speech. The government shall make no law infringing upon the freedom of speech. By regulating that one side receives equal airtime as another side, they are infringing upon the free speech by taking away 50 percent of the airwaves to spout the big government point of view.

Does it really make sense to allow the government, a non-biased entity, to regulate speech in this way? Naturally, they will want opinions that support their big government ways to be repeated over and over on the airwaves. Most people do not believe in this way of thinking and so would naturally not want to listen to it. That is why liberal talk radio fails and libertarian talk radio succeeds.

If the liberal side wants to succeed, then they should succeed based on their ideas. Since they cannot succeed based on their ideas, which are naturally weaker, then they are attempting to implement their ideas using the government as a guise. Think about it. If the liberal way of thinking were so popular, then they would have lots of talk radio shows sharing their ideas and values, but their talk radio shows do not succeed as much as libertarian and conservative talk shows. If you allow the fairness doctrine to come back, then you must apply it to every form of medium. Wouldnít you agree? That would be the fair thing to do.

Finally, it would appear that every major crisis that we seem to be experiencing as Americans can be directly tied to the mismanagement of the federal government. Social security is currently almost broken because Congress has spent $2 trillion of the surplus. That is outrageous. The housing bubble was created by the Federal Reserve which was created by an act of Congress. Health is broken because the government is too involved and gives too many people free health care, thus removing the incentive to stay healthy. This list could go on and on. Things have never been so messed up. We are living on borrowed time as the federal government continues to spend and spend and borrow and borrow and spend and spend. You guys are killing the American way of life, a life based on freedom and individualism and trying to replace it with progressive and socialistic values even though history has taught us that these values are far inferior to freedom and liberty. What say you about your role in this regression to progressive values? I challenge you to a debate of the ideas and I challenge you to honestly reflect upon the damage that you and socialists on both sides have done to the American people. The day of reckoning is approaching when the American people will vote both parties out of office, so that we can assume our rightful place as free people in this land. Right now, you and Congress have created a system where the people serve the government and the special interests that they support. It should never have come to this, but it has. It isnít right. You know it and I know it. Take a look at Congressís approval rating. What say you about that? It is currently around 15 percent and has been stuck there for quite some time.
